The International Fan Versus K-Pop

So yet again, we are going around in circles, constantly complaining, and acting surprised. Our favourite idol or group is embarking on a world tour. So why do we get so shocked, when we find out that we won’t be seeing them?

“Oh *enter K-Pop idol/group name here*  are going on a ‘World Tour’, lets check the countries they’re visiting.”

Then you find out, that you’re not included- again.

I think we all hold onto that small glimpse of hope, that one day something will change.

The curse of being an international fan i.e. not being from the following countries:

  • U.S.A
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • South Korea
  • China
  • Hong Kong
  • Malaysia
  • Thailand

…shall I go on?

In a nutshell, Europe gets pushed under the rug, every time!

We all know that Europe (and many other parts of the world) play a big part in K-Pop’s success- including residual income.

Music show votes, physical and digital album sales, video streaming, national awards show voting; the list is endless!

I’m not exactly sure if music companies make the conscious decision to not include Europe in their concert and fan meet tours; or if the countries that they wish to visit, don’t have the budget?

Perhaps the concert/entertainment companies don’t have the funds to host these groups/artists?

But I feel like it’s not entirely the case.

The funny thing is popular groups such as Big Bang빅뱅 and SHINee 샤이니 have come to the UK before. SHINee 샤이니 came to the UK in 2009; since then 8 years have passed.  We now have SHINee World V in the USA…

Big Bang 빅뱅 were in London for their Alive Tour in 2012, and I’m pretty sure I heard them say they would be back.

But let’s just act like the MADE World Tour didn’t happen, shall we? It’s like Big Bang빅뱅 are Harry Potter and the wizards of the wizarding world, and Europe is “He who should not be named” a.k.a Lord Voldermort.

No one even spoke about it! So I assumed the tour was over, then bam! MADE Tour fan meet in Honolulu; just to rub the salt in our already fresh wounds!

With GOT7 갓세븐 I can see that they like North America a lot, but the year has just started, so let’s give JYP a chance.

As they won an MTV European Music award last year, I’m expecting them to make an appearance in our continent soon!

My predictions for Europe and the rest of the world is that MONSTA X 몬스타엑스,  and BTS 방탄소년단 are most likely to grace us with their presence this year.
