Welcome back to this week’s Wednesdays Whereabouts! So, who have I got lined up for the second instalment? Well it’s another well-loved girl group who took the K-Pop industry by storm: 2NE1!

~Let’s start!~

May 6th 2009, saw the debut of one of K-Pop’s most popular girl groups ever created: 2NE1. Formed by YG Entertainment the girls rose to fame with the release of their extended plays, “2NE1” {2009} and “2NE1” {2011}, and two studio albums, “To Anyone” {2010} and “Crush” {2014} (one of my favourite albums ever, btw). Both albums and eps all peaked at the number one position on the Gaon Album Chart; in addition, 2NE1 also scored nine number one hits on the Gaon Digital Chart.

The pedestal 2NE1 sat upon started rocking back in 2014, 2NE1 had gone into hiatus following the suspension of Bom’s contract due to her drug scandal and Dara, CL and Minzy’s exploration of other independent ventures. However, it was confirmed by YG Entertainment that Minzy had left the group in April 2016, the intention being that 2NE1 would continue on as a trio. But, later that year in November, YG Entertainment announced the disbandment of 2NE1 entirely. Their last single, “Goodbye”, was released in January 2017 as a farewell to their fans; and was allegedly inspired by a letter CL initially wrote to Minzy after her departure in back in April.

Prior to their split, 2NE1 was considered one of the most successful and popular girl groups in South Korea; and one of the bestselling girl groups of all time, selling over 66.5 million records.

So, where are they now? Are they safe? Eating? Sleeping?

All the important questions you may have will be answered and your minds put at ease!

Let me break it down for y’all…

Bom – Whilst our lovely Miss Bom Park took part in 2NE1’s final song “Goodbye”, she was released from her contract with YG Entertainment before the song was put out. But never fear! On April 30 2017, Bom announced through her social media that she is now under YG’s sub-label, The Black Label and is preparing to release a solo album. Yay!

However, a day later on May 1 2017, YG Entertainment denied that statement and declared that Bom hasn’t signed any new contract with YG or any sub-label since they broke her contract back in November 2016…

…wait, what the hell is going on?!

Shortly after this statement was released, Bom followed up on social media replying to fans that she did actually sign a contract and she is coming back.

I’m majorly confused guys…she’s is coming back? Or nah? YG what you playing at?!

Dara – Although Dara left 2NE1, she remined with YG Entertainment as a solo artist and actress. Dara has been quite the busy bee in the acting world, beginning the year 2016 with a special appearance in the MBC drama “One More Happy Ending” and participating in the promotional single “Loving U” as part of the drama’s soundtrack.

She then joined the judging panel of ABS-CBN’s reality singing competition show “Pinoy Boyband Superstar”, alongside Filipino top stars Yeng Constantino, Vice Ganda, and Aga Muhlach. The show premiered in the September, and became the most watched weekend program, and the second highest program in television viewership nationwide.

In 2017, Dara became the host of OnStyle’s beauty program Get It Beauty, alongside Honey Lee and Gugudan’s Kim Se-jeong. She then starred alongside Han Jae-suk in her domestic debut film “One Step”. She received acting praise from its director, Jeon Jae Hong, who noted that she only had one retake during the filming process due to her professionalism (now that’s admirable, my gosh go Dara!).

Following this, it was announced that she was cast in the film adaptation of the popular webtoon “Cheese in the Trap”. It was also revealed that Dara would star in OnStyle’s new television program “Relationship Appeal”. Furthermore, in June 2017, it was reported and then confirmed by director Lee Won Jun, that Dara was cast in a Vampire action film called “107th Year of Night”.

In December 2017, a year after the disbandment of 2NE1, Dara returned to singing and performed the 2NE1’s hits by herself in a solo headlining concert.

Annnd breath…wow, Dara do you even have time to sleep?? Lol.

CL – Since 2NE1 split, our fearless leader CL has been taking some down time and focusing on her (long awaited) return to the solo life. A month before the disbandment was announced, she had kicked off her first solo North American tour: the ‘Hello Bitches’ tour; which ran between October 29th and November 14th 2016.

May 2017 saw CL feature on Lil Yachty’s song “Surrender”, which was an exclusive track off the deluxe edition of his ‘Teenage Emotions’ album. CL also recorded an original single for the My Little Pony: The Movie soundtrack called “No Better Feelin’”, which was released on September 22nd 2017.

*sigh* Whilst this is all good…YG…where’s CL’s solo album, huh? We’ve all (the fans and CL) been waiting and waiting…what’s the hold up??

Minzy – As you all know, Minzy left 2NE1 before the group officially disbanded, and in fact, she didn’t just leave 2NE1 – she left YG Entertainment. It was later revealed that on May 2016, Minzy had signed with CJ E&M’s subsidiary label Music Works. Shortly after this news broke, it was revealed that Minzy was preparing for her debut solo album and was going to be experimenting with different genres of music.

In January 2017, Minzy was confirmed as a cast member of the second season of “Sister’s Slam Dunk”. The show aired its first broadcast in the February, where Minzy was appointed to become the main singer, main dancer, dance tutor and choreographer for the second generation of Unnies by legendary producer and composer Kim Hyung Suk (mentor of JYP). She was voted as leader of the group on the third episode and was also qualified to be the team’s rap teacher, but due to her heavy workload, she could not take on the role. On the 12th episode, Minzy was named as the rapping director due to Kim Hyung Suk lacking the knowledge to fully carry out this role.

February was also when it was announced that her first solo single, “I Wanted To Love” would be released as the soundtrack of the MBC drama “The Rebel”. Later that year, on April 17, Minzy released her solo debut EP, “Minzy Work 01. “Uno””, along with title track “Ninano” (Go Minzy!! It’s an actual bop lol).

Well, the four girls have definitely been busy since their respective departure and disbandment of 2NE1. Fingers crossed that we will be hearing and seeing more of them and their projects in the near future – 2NE1, we love you!!~

– Beckie
